DETROIT, Michigan, March 16, 2010...Students, teachers and families are invited to “Go Green” with the Michigan Opera Theatre’s Children’s Chorus (MOTCC) in a fully staged production of The Very Last Green Thing opera, April 24, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. on the Detroit Opera House main stage. The MOTCC will be partnering with The Detroit Science Center and RecycleHere! in this fun and educational opera performed by young people for young people.
Composed by Cary John Franklin with libretto by Michael Patrick Albano, the opera depicts a classroom of students in 2192 that take a rare field trip outside and discover a time capsule, containing an unusual object - a small, withering plant. Children and families will learn about the importance of preserving our environment for generations to come.
The Detroit Science Center will give a brief science demonstration before the performance from their traveling “Going Green” show. Audiences are also encouraged to bring a plastic bottle from home and RecycleHere! will be on hand at the performance to collect and recycle them.
The MOTCC is also hosting a The Very Last Green Thing YouTube Video Competition. The contest gives participants a chance to win one of five family-four packs of tickets for admission to the Detroit Science Center. Entrants must create a video response explaining how their family is “going green.” Individuals interested in entering can participate by clicking the link to YouTube on the Detroit Opera houses webpage or through following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haWZle5qIcY. Contestants have until Wednesday, April 23, 2010 to post a response.
One of two very successful children’s operas composed by Cary John Franklin, The Very Last Green Thing was first commissioned by the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and made its world premiere in 1992. Since then the production has informed and moved audiences all over the country.
Cary John Franklin is a nationally recognized composer and a recipient of numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the Meet the Composer Award. He has served as President of the American Composers Forum and has worked as the chorus master/associate conductor for the Opera Theatre in St. Louis. He is currently the conductor for the Macalester Symphony Orchestra and the Macalester Symphonic Band.
Ticket prices range from $15-$50. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Detroit Opera House box office (1526 Broadway, Detroit), by calling 313-237-SING, or online at www.MichiganOpera.org
