As part of Wayne State University’s General Lecture Series, Michigan Opera Theatre’s Audience Engagement Coordinator and music historian Austin Stewart will offer a lecture on Aaron Copland’s opera The Tender Land. The conversation will focus on the history of opera in America, especially those commissioned for television in an attempt to bridge the divide between high and popular culture, and Michigan Opera Theatre’s own history with Copland and The Tender Land.

“Should one hear a movie score?” This is a question Aaron Copland posed to all movie patrons, asking them to consider whether they “listened to” or merely “heard” film scores.  Maple Theater’s Secret Cinema on Thursday, February 25 will feature a film rich in the number of ways a film score serves the screen, and Austin Stewart will provide a brief overview of Copland’s own career in Hollywood and his lasting impression on the silver screen.

The Grosse Ile Musicale has provided the Downriver community with vibrant, community-based arts programming since 1932. Michigan Opera Theatre is proud to join this impressive history, bringing to Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 27 at 2:00p.m. a free concert of chamber vocal music by great American composers. The performance will spotlight works of Aaron Copland, the “Dean of American Composers.” Musical selections will be accompanied by a lively discussion of the composers’ lives and times, and will prominently feature The Tender Land, Copland’s only opera, which will be performed in March by Michigan Opera Theatre’s Resident Artists at the Heinz C. Prechter Educational and Performing Arts Center (Taylor, MI) and Macomb Center for the Performing Arts.

Members of the renowned Michigan Opera Theatre orchestra will join pianist Mary Siciliano and soprano Mary Martin in an evening of chamber music by the Dean of American Composers, Aaron Copland. Selected repertoire will highlight several eras in the life of this guiding musical voice, and allow audiences an opportunity to experience his music in a more intimate setting. Coupled with the performances of The Tender Land by Michigan Opera Theatre’s resident artists in March, these evenings of chamber music will express the magnetism of a composer whose music helped defined the twentieth-century human condition in America.
