Lesson 3: Compare and Contrast

Objectives: The students will be able to compare and contrast two books about the Underground Railroad.
Materials:
Books - Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson
The Secret to Freedom by Marcia Vaughan
Venn diagram worksheet
Procedures:
1. Instruct or review with the students the function of a Venn diagram.
If needed, model a short example lesson comparing and contrasting two items using a Venn diagram.
2. Read to the students Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson and The Secret to Freedom by Marcia Vaughan.
3. Give each student a blank Venn diagram to complete independently on the two stories.
4. Complete a class Venn diagram using the two books. Discuss how the information in the books is similar and different. Allow students to express the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of quilts.
