Tosca

Eleanor – Harrison Twp.

It just doesn’t get any better than this production! The artists, sets, musicians are fabulous! THIS is opera at its finest!

Ty – Detroit

More than I expected. The performance was superb. The three famous arias were exactly as I have heard then and then to see the emotions behind the words took it to a different level.
JUST AMAZING!!! Only wished the death of the sleezeball Scarpia was more painful.

Vfgeheb – Bloomfield Hills

That performance could have been a wild success in any A house anywhere it was as so strong! Congrats to all of you. It was glorious!

Melissa – Royal Oak

Tosca was wonderful! One of our favorites we have seen so far!

Edward Treisman – Bloomfield Hills

One of the finest opera experiences I can remember. The voices were outstanding, the acting, especially this Tosca, was very dramatic and the coordination of orchestra and singers near perfect. The richness of the orchestra exceptional. The sets were beautiful works of art. The piety and solemnity of the church scene was in sharp contrast to the lust and beastiality of Scarpia. All in all, a memorable evening.

Connolly Jenkins – Detroit

Beautiful. The villian was mercifully killed and the vocals were also to die for ⚘

Bill W. – West Bloomfield

Excellent.

Ami Dotan – Birmingham

We enjoyed Tosca very much!

Shirley Faust – Troy

This is the best production of Tosca that I have seen. The tenor and soprano were excellent, as was Scarpia, and all the rest. The scenery was grand. I think I have to come back to see it a second time! Thank you, MOT!

natalie – Ann Arbor

We have seen “Tosca” now 4 times including a production is Paris. This one far outshines all the others. The orchestra and sets were excellent. The passion and vocal and acting skill of the principals was outstanding. Just a wonderful production.

Lewis Wagner – West Bloomfield

What an amazing performance!! Everything down to the smallest detail was excellent. I melted in my chair. The orchestra sounded like it was on fire during the opening act. The costumes were on point. The singing was like heaven on earth.

Wendy – Bloomfield Hills

Amazing set design, costuming! Not to mention beautiful Arias! A masterpiece!

mad4puccini – Plymouth

Bravissimo, Bravissima all around. Great sets, great singing, orchestra superb although maybe a bit overpowering the singers in the first act. Kudos for Mr. Grimsley as Scarpia, the man we all love to hate. We all love to see him get “il bacio di Tosca” in the chest, but could have used more blood!

Mike – Ann Arbor

Wonderful performance. Puccini, of course, is without peer. I love this opera. In this performance, the artists were great, the orchestra  beautiful, the sets well done; altogether a delightful evening.

Liz – Rochester Hills

Tosca was just fabulous. All of the performers were wonderful. This is opera at it’s finest!

Bonnie – Traverse City

The orchestra was fabulous. I was impressed with the balance between the orchestra and the vocalists throughout. The sets were very effective. Although, all the vocalists were excellent, I was particularly impressed with Tosca. The seamless fluidity of her voice was stunning!

Dave – Rochester Hills

Opera is alive & well in the “D”. Music-Talent on stage-The costumes & props all superb. Please keep up these standards & talent coming to the Great & beautiful Detroit opera house! Outstanding five stars!!!!

Sue D – Southfield

By far the BEST production of Tosca I’ve ever seen and heard-anywhere! A memorable performance in all aspects. Thank you MOT for the wonderful evening!

WW & EE (regular opera goers) – Birmingham

Great performance. Enjoyed this opera more than any in the many previous years.

Rob – Ann Arbor

Beautiful. I feel so lucky to have been there. I often cry at opera, and I did this time, too. Exquisite work, all of you. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the rest of us; indeed, you are all gifts to the rest of us.

Betty Bright – Bloomfield Hills

You have my sympathy if you don’t have the fortune to experience “Tosca” !

Ida – Windsor

Tosca was my family’s first opera. Tosca left such an impression upon us, that it will surely not be our last opera. A truly beautiful and mesmerizing performance, along with an amazing venue. Bravo to the artists. Thank you for the experience.

Jack C – Ann Arbor

If you like Tosca, then attend this Tosca! The set is over the top, the principals are international stars known for their acting ability and they deliver! The director is also a choreographer which may explain the excellent direction and movement on stage. Puccini’s music is lovingly performed and the famous arias will not disappoint!

Bree – Sterling Heights

An incredible first opera experience and a wonderful way to end the night of my birthday. thank you for an amazing performance.

R & M – Onsted

Splendid presentation. A delight.

Dr. Smith – Detroit

When an audible segment of the public snorts and giggles throughout the performance of this tragic masterpiece–even greeting Mario’s impending execution with a guffaw–something has gone seriously wrong. It was not the fault of the artists, who sang beautifully. The behavior of the opening night audience saddened me. I hope that a more engaged crowd will be present when I return to hear the second cast at next Sunday’s matinee.

Cristina – Farmington Hills

SUPERB, simply superb. I can’t remember the last time I was as taken by any performance as I have been by Detroit Opera’s Tosca. The voices were amazing, the acting of the main characters as well as supporting characters filled with emotion in every detail, from the love filled arias to Tosca’s kiss rendering justice on that horrible Scarpia, to the solemn marching of the soldiers making the gravity of Cavaradossi’s situation so real. The musicians and the choir (special kudos to that angel voice in Act III) were magnificent. The excellently crafted set in every Act completely transports the audience to 1800 Italy.

Ruth – Bloomfield Hills

Wonderful production! The singing was excellent, Tosca’s dresses were beautiful, and the staging was excellent!

Dina Soresi Winter – Grosse Pointe Shores

An excellent production of TOSCA with surprises in each act! Even Scarpia’s murder was different! “Vissi d’arte” was wonderfully sung by Alexia Voulgaridou. Brava Alexia as Tosca! Special touches in Act II revealed outstanding acting ability!
The sets were stunning, the staging totally convincing; It was a powerful and beautiful performance on every level . The orchestra was in the hands of a knowing conductor who understood every nuance of Puccini’s score. They played with a sense of truth and loyalty to Puccini’s wishes. ( I would still like to see the candles placed as the composer indicated in his music., after the death of Scarpia. It would add to the dramatic effect. (it was, nonetheless , a most powerful scene.) This is a performance I would recommend to all lovers of theatre and drama. It’s one of the greatest of grand Opera.

Dan Drucker – Southfield

This was the best performance of Tosca that I have attended. All the principal singers were excellent, both as singers and as actors.

Old Proofreader – GPP

Excellent performance.
FYI, in the last act, “ecstasy” is misspelled as “ecstacy” in subtitle.

Old proofreader.

CorinneO – Bingham Farms

Tosca was absolutely sensational–the leads sang so beautifully and the orchestra sounded phenomenal. I loved the conductor and the energy that he brought to the production. MOT has another huge success. Congratulations!

Dan – Rochester Hills

In Tosca Puccini uses his unique musical language to touch places in the human psyche that very few other composers have, or ever could. This is one of the masterworks of Western Art and anyone who has any interest in great opera should run down to MOT and get their tickets now. The cast is a group of highly accomplished international stars and they put it all out there. Everything works together – scenery, costumes, orchestra, vocals, everything. Opera in Detroit is special. Get ready to experience and enjoy a special evening.

Thomas – Ann Arbor

This is Tosca at its best. Every aspect is as it ought to be. Those great Puccini melodies are still ringing in my mind.

Vizuet

When maestro Galli is in town- you have to drop everything and come to hear him conduct ! It is he who makes the magic in the pit, who derives subtle colors from the orchestra, who skillfully accompanies the soloists and creates drama and breathes passion into music. He is a driving force of the entire opera! Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Tosca conducted by Galli!

Twylla – Ann Arbor

Unbelievably beautiful and dramatic Opera. The pit orchestra was superb. The strings were perfect in how they captured the emotions displayed on stage and the low brass added anger and frustration and terror. The trumpets were crystal clear and the french horns were absolutely superb in their intonation, perfect pitch and incredible harmony. The flute and piccolo added an urgent fervor. I just loved the orchestra and was as entertained by them as by the singers and actors
All of the talented singers were wonderful. I really can’t single anyone out. Each character sang beautifully and with such control. I was mesmerized.
The set was stunning. The scene with light coming in the window and the red wrap thrown over the couch was incredibly visually pleasing. The sets added so much ambience to the overall feel of the opera.
Costumes were fantastic. Loved the more innocent colors of Tosca’s first dress then the subtle hues of the men with Tosca’s bright red gown.
Absolutely fabulous, congratulations to everyone involved!!

Tom S. – Roseville

Everything was SPOT ON with this production: the singers and acting, the costumes, and the sets. It was, truly, the BEST version of Tosca that I have seen. Bravi to the entire crew!

Jeffrey Marraccini – Troy

Incredible production through and through, from the performances, set design (it felt like early 1800’s Italy!), and pacing. Having the two intermissions was clearly necessary given the impressive sets with their great height, breadth, and detail.
The musical performance and operatic performances are top notch in Michigan Opera Theatre’s Tosca. I highly recommend it!

Mike – Grosse Pointe Woods

Superb music, performance, staging and sets, all presented with energy and musical excellence. I have never heard the MOT orchestra play better (and they are ALWAYS excellent)! I almost forgot to listen to/read the lyrics, I became so aware of the beautiful musical score, orchestration, and presentation. An all-around winner! And topped off with the announcement of a fantastic 2018-2019 Opera Season and special events, with The Summer King still remaining in May to conclude this opera season.
If you’ve never experienced opera, why are you waiting? Musical excellence is readily available in downtown Detroit in the remarkable Detroit Opera House. Right across the road from Comerica Park, and the MOT team brings a perennial champion.

Paul Horn – Waterford

This is the best MOT production I’ve ever seen! The staging, the orchestra, and especially the principals were all top-notch. Keep up the good work!

Renate – Beverly Hills

One of MOT’s best productions ever, this beautifully sung and staged Tosca was spellbinding, with outstanding support from the MOT orchestra.

Matt M. – Beverly Hills

If you have never been to an opera , I cannot think of a better production or opera to start with. The music is soaring; the performers were at their inspired best. Scarpia set the energy of the performance which remained high throughout. Alexia Voulgaridou as Tosca sang so beautifully and effortlessly. And the third act, brief a cappella duet with Tosca and Cavarodossi (Andrea Care) was exquisite. The production held my attention from beginning to end. Congratulations MOT.

Joan – Oakland Township

Feeling so incredibly fortunate to have seen Tosca at MOT last night. Engaging acting, gloriously performed music, gorgeous sets and costuming, and awe-inspiring singing. A++

J. Perry – Grosse Pointe Farms

Great performance !! Singing , acting , sets and costumes were all spectacular!! Scarpia was truly evil and deserving of his fate . Every character was convincing . The 3 signature Arias were beautifully done. I’m not sure why they felt the show needed 2 lengthy intermissions ,as I think the 2nd intermission could have been shorter . But this Opera was worth the price and well worth the time !

Armando Lopez – Plymouth

OUTSTANDING! Last night’s perfromance of Tosca was one of the best…if not the best…I’ve ever attended. The voices were superb , the scenery, which was much different from what I’ve seen before, was also very attractive. And, the acting , particulary by Tosca and Scarpia, exceeded ex[ectations. This was truly a perfromance for the ages.

Ann Marie Duda – Lathrup Village

Totally enjoyed last nights performance! Best artists, sets and musicians I have had the pleasure to be a part of.

Harvey & Lois – Farmington Hills

Great scenery, wonderful production.

Michael – Royal Oak

Just and excellent performance!!!

Marla – Detroit

This is opera at its finest. Everything is done to perfection…..the set, the costumes, the acting, the orchestration, and of course, the singing. Just wonderful.

Domeda – Detroit

The performance was fantastic. The operatic singer/actress for Floria Tosca was wonderful. So was Caravadossi and Scarpia! The singing and and stage production was excellent. A very fine opera experience.

RStarr – Novi

Thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the performance. Plan on seeing many more!

Jody B. – West Bloomfield

A wonderful evening at the MOT. Beautiful sets, great chorus, wonderful orchestra, and the voices of the principle characters as well as their acting were beyond anything I could have expected. A memorable night!

Karen – Bloomfield Hills

Outstanding from beginning to end! Opera at it’s best!

-Karla S. – Detroit

Bravo! The emotions that this production of Tosca evoked was breathtaking. The singing, the orchestra, the set…EPIC! I was captivated by it all.

Charlie Baker – Northville

Exquisite. Singing, staging, lighting, acting, music — every detail. I am a sucker for Puccini and it simply does not get any better than this.

Chris I – Goodrich

We took our 12 year old to his first Opera performance, and he was riveted by the singing and staging. Bravo MOT; you gained another young fan.

Steve Gold – Huntington Woods

Enjoyed every aspect of last night’s performance! Too bad when the marvelous actor/singer who played Scarpia was booed rather than applauded by the audience, though. It was in fun, of course, but he deserved the same appreciation and gratitude the other fine artists received. Fine work, MOT!

Nicola M Rooney – Brighton

Sets, costuming, voices, all superb. Scarpia was convincingly evil. From the dress Circle, sadly the orchestra continues to be over exuberant at times and drowns the singers. Otherwise, a fine evening of drama and passion.

Ken and Kathy Myers – Bloomfield Hills

An opera performance like no other! Wonderful performers, a great orchestra, great stage scenery. Didn’t want it to end!!

Fernando – Shelby Twp

She did an awesome performance and is the perfect match for such a beautiful character, Thank you!

Hans & Loreilei Fink – Windsor

Excellent Production, Beautiful singing.

Pam – Waterford

An excellent production of one of my favorite operas. Saw it the last day with the Tosca and Cavaradossi who had the opportunity to sing for only one performance. What a shame! Both were terrific. At times, the orchestra was a bit too loud, overshadowing the singers, but that is my only complaint.

Ray – Plymouth

Very enjoyable! The performances were outstanding and the stage settings very impressive. We were unsure about attending while driving downtown through the winter storm weather but it turned out that we were very glad we made the effort. If you haven’t been to the DOH for one of its premier performances, you need to do it soon!

MoUM Northville – Northville

The staging, acting, music and singing are excellent!!!

KathyC – North Myrtle Beach

Brilliant! It was my very first opera, and it was fabulous, amazing, and totally an afternoon to remember! Thank you for this wonderful wonderful event!

Brian Murphy – Rocheser Hills

I totally agreer with eleanor: this really is opera at its finest. I had real gooseflesh. WONDERFUL! (And Dr Wallace Peace’s intro was amusing and very helpful.)

Mk – Detroit

Excellent performance and voices. My only critique is the very abrupt ending which in my opinion takes quiet a bit away from such a beautiful performance

Andrés – Warren

I enjoyed every second of it . Just fabulous and fantastic. Congratulations to all of you who made this production possible.

Paul E

Outstanding production
Great cast
Great orchestra
The tenor’s Noah Stewart, 3rd act aria was the best I have ever heard

mike o – Detroit

I thought the performances were excellent and the sets were extraordinary!
Go see it, you will be thrilled.

Carl Bull – Windsor

This opera was my first experience with this art form. Every aspect of our night (I took my daughter) was exceptional: the explanation provided prior to curtain, the actors, the exquisite skill demonstrated by the orchestra as well as the service provided by the staff.
We will be back!
Thanks, Carl

Dr Deborah Buzzy – South Lyon

Simply marvelous the best Tosca I have seen at the Michigan Opera Theater. From the spectacular new set and the outstanding performances from Noah Stewart and Kelly Kaduce, not only in their beautiful vocals but also their superior acting , rates this an A++++. Well done you. I brought my nephew, 16 years old, to his first Opera and created a new opera buff. Yes

Barbara Williams – Warren

The Sunday 4/15 cast was very impressive: there was genuine chemistry between Mario and Tosca, and Scarpia was especially wicked. I just wish the audience hadn’t booed the singer at curtain call: cheer the artist, don’t jeer his character. I thought the 2nd act was especially strong and so cinematic (a characteristic of Puccini v. Verdi that soprano Sonya Yoncheva mentioned during an intermission interview at the Saturday 4/14 Met Live in HD “Luisa Miller” broadcast–I see what she meant). My only quibble was the marching of the soldiers in Act 3: they weren’t quite in sync, and it distracted from the impending tragedy. It was wonderful to see the truly legendary Dr. DiChiera again; I wish him well.

Ann

What a wonderful production…one of the reasons I love to come to the final performance is that I get to see the up and coming artists…this was a treat !
Noah Stewart’s Cavadarossi was amazing! What a voice! Kelly Kaduce ‘s Tosca was thrilling…and of course the production in general , sets, orchestra, and a grand Grimsley Scarpia ! What a feast !

Stela – Windsor

Can’t say enough good things. It was beautiful, emotional, dramatic, amazing, outstandingly well performed. The three main characters were excellent, but I was exceptionally impressed with Tosca. Powerful yet very seamless and sweet, the fluidity of her voice was stunning! A wonderful evening beginning to end.
Thank you

Charlotte Singewald – Waterford

Have enjoyed Tosca many times over the years. This was by far the best production. Every thing was absolutely fantastic. Bravo!

Suzie and Bill – Plymouth

Absolutely great voices, great acting and great orchestra. Thank you MOT!

Bennett Stallone – Ann Arbor

Wonderful productions. The scenery was magnificent. The Voice were beautiful. The ending of the first act was a sight I will always remember. Bravo!

tenormary – Rochester Hills

Wonderful production. Although I attend the Sunday matinee and don’t experience the star singers, I find the artists outstanding anyway. I have been attending the MOT for 30 years and this was one of the most polished productions I have seen.
The orchestra did an amazing job with some very lush music.

Marilee – Ithaca

Lovely production. Took my daughter — her first opera and she loved it!! Pre-concert talk was fabulous!!

Sarah – Clinton Township

Ah, I hate to be the spoiler , but here it is. I enjoyed Tosca overall, my third performance. Puccini is my favorite opera composer. Great sets, costumes, music, arias — all there for a great audience experience. Except it wasn’t. The orchestra again drowned out the high notes of the singer. (I am moving downstairs for next season. ) And the house was so hot. This is not me, the hot flashes lady, but my male neighbor also said it was hot. Between the loud orchestra and the temperature in the house, this was not the fantastic theater experience Ive had before in DOH.

Barbara – Brighton

Fabulous! The music was fantastic. Most notable to me, however, was the excellent acting. I remember when the voice was the most important aspect. This cast was beautiful and believable along with their outstanding vocal performance.

Marjorie Trafeli – Bloomfield Hills

I loved it. The amount of training such music requires has to be phenominal. It showed at its best.

Joel Boyd – Kalamazoo

Loved the performance. The entire staging was so professional including the sets, costumes and musicians. The orchestra played such an important part in helping me to feel the story. The singers were excellent; not only the principles but the wonderful chorus.
