November 25-27 at the Detroit Opera House

DETROIT, Michigan (Nov. 1, 2011)… The Detroit Opera House continues its annual holiday tradition with the Detroit premiere of BalletMet Columbus’ production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. For four magical performances from Nov. 25-27, this quintessential holiday event features a talented cast of more than 100 professional and student dancers, dazzling choreography and sets, and numerous festive activities for children and families. Tchaikovsky’s glorious score will be performed live by the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra.

The Nutcracker has charmed audiences around the world for over a century, and “reminds us of treasured times with our family,” said BalletMet Artistic Directory Gerard Charles. The company’s production, with larger-than-life characters and narration by Sir Roger Moore, aims “to keep The Nutcracker an entertaining event that is both fresh and rekindles a warm nostalgia.” BalletMet Columbus of Ohio, renowned for its versatility and innovative repertory, ranks among the nation’s largest dance companies, and its Dance Academy ranks among the largest dance-training centers.

As always, all matinee performances feature a range of family-friendly activities, including live reindeer before the show, face painting, and photos with Santa and the Nutcracker. The “Sugar Plum Parade” follows the performance, giving children a special opportunity to meet the dancers on the Detroit Opera House stage. A buffet lunch before matinees will be available for $10.

In addition to more than 50 young local dancers, performances will feature local high school choirs singing with the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Peter Stafford Wilson. The choirs, from Stoney Creek, Chippewa Valley, Adams and Rochester High Schools, will also sing in the grand lobby of the Detroit Opera House before the show and during intermission.

The Detroit Opera House’s 2011-12 dance series is made possible by a generous gift from Maggie Allesee. This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from Michigan Council for the Arts & Cultural Affairs, General Mills Foundation, and Land O’Lakes Foundation.

Ticket prices range from $29 – $76. Special discounts for families are available. Tickets may be purchased online at www.MichiganOpera.org, by calling 313-237-SING, or in person at the Detroit Opera House ticket office (1526 Broadway).
