New Year, New Journey
Another year is upon us, and we at Michigan Opera Theatre are gearing up for what promises to be a time of celebration, transition and, as always, great performances.
As we continue our 2016-17 season, we are proud to honor and celebrate the legacy of our beloved Founder and Artistic Director David DiChiera. His vision, dedication and artistry have brought exceptional per
formers and productions to Detroit and contributed to its cultural enrichment and development for the past 46 years. We look forward to recognizing his great achievements this spring with celebrations in his honor, concluding with his own opera, Cyrano.
With DiChiera’s transition to Artistic Director Emeritus, we welcome Stephen Lord as Principal Conductor, overseeing MOT’s artistic direction through the 2018-19 season. Lord brings decades of experience, conducting operas all over the world, including a long term association as a guest conductor with MOT. Under his leadership, we will continue to bring compelling opera and dance as we count down to our Golden Anniversary in 2021.
2017 also continues the work of our Michigan Opera Theatre Studio young artists program and their second annual full-length opera, Little Women, performed at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. We are proud to be able to work with such talented emerging artists and share this beautiful art with partners in our larger community outside of downtown Detroit.
Of course, fall of 2017 marks the beginning of a brand new season at MOT. While we can’t share the details of our upcoming performances yet, it’s safe to say our next season will be full of old favorites, including performances by one of our favorite ballet companies. It will also include a brand new opera we think will particularly resonate with our Metro Detroit community. Stay tuned in March for our season announcement.
As we embark on a new journey in a new year, in true opera fashion, we wish you a Happy New Year full of love, passion, and of course, great music!
