Overview

American Ballet Theatre (ABT) returns to the Detroit area with a brand-new production of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s monumental work. Presented in collaboration with the University Musical Society and performed with the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra, this classic ballet with more than 80 performers tells the enchanting tale of the beautiful princess, Aurora, cursed to sleep for 100 years by an evil sorceress, until awakened by the kiss of a handsome prince. A Conversation with Professor Tim Scholl

Professor Tim Scholl will present his lecture “Re-Awakening The Sleeping Beauty: The Lively Debate Over Alexei Ratmansky’s New Production” in conjunction with ABT’s upcoming performances at the Detroit Opera House. Tim Scholl is a scholar of Russian and dance historian who has written two books on the history of Russian dance: From Petipa to Balanchine, Classical Revival and the Modernization of Ballet and Sleeping Beauty, a Legend in Progress. A limited number of Scholl’s book on The Sleeping Beauty will be available for purchase at the event.

Synopsis

This classic story ballet premiered 125 years ago at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The story is one of the most familiar and enchanting of all fairy tales: the beautiful princess Aurora is cursed by the evil sorceress Carabosse to sleep for 100 years, until she is awakened by the kiss of a handsome prince. It’s ballet on the grandest possible scale, with superstar dancers, opulent sets and costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s ravishing score performed live by the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra.
