MICHIGAN OPERA THEATRE HISTORY

Michigan Opera Theatre is the State of Michigan’s premiere opera company, which, through its commitment to producing the very best professional productions from the grand opera, opera, operetta, musical theater, ballet and arts education programming, serves as a statewide cultural resource. Founded and directed by internationally recognized impresario Dr. David DiChiera, Michigan Opera Theatre ranks among the nation’s ten largest opera companies by operating budget and audience.

Michigan Opera Theatre offers an essential, vibrant contribution to the quality of life for Detroit area residents and to communities throughout the region. This dynamic cultural resource exemplifies artistic excellence. Since its inception in 1971, Michigan Opera Theatre has offered Southeast Michigan outstanding main stage repertory, ranging from the comedy of Mozart to the drama of Verdi to the Tony Award-winning verismo of Stephen Sondheim.

Michigan Opera Theatre strives not only for artistic excellence, but also to be an innovative leader. By presenting culturally significant productions relative to the diverse populace of the region, such as Porgy and Bess, Anoush, King Roger, Dead Man Walking and the recent world premiere production Margaret Garner, the company has expanded its audience and brought the magic of live theatre to thousands of people.

Additionally, Michigan Opera Theatre has furthered interest in the arts through community outreach, touring programs and educational efforts. The company’s award-winning Department of Community Programs, under the leadership of Karen VanderKloot DiChiera, is committed to community outreach and education, presenting a variety of programs ranging from the popular Learning at the Opera House series to touring productions and workshops.

In its tradition of championing American operas, MOT presented the world premiere of David DiChiera’s Cyrano in 2007, achieving national and international acclaim.  To add to his long list of accolades, DiChiera received the National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors award in 2010, our nation’s highest honor for lifetime achievement in opera.
